About the Feature Presenters
Gillian Higgins
Equine Anatomist and Biomechanist
Gillian Higgins, founder and principal lecturer of Horses Inside Out, is an anatomist, biomechanist lecturer and author.
Gillian is passionate about horses, anatomy and sharing all she knows for the good of the horse.
Having competed up to advanced level eventing and achieved her BHS Senior Coach and completed multiple therapy qualifications. Gillian is in a great place to apply anatomy to riding, training and therapy.
Gillian is passionate about horses, equine anatomy and sharing all she knows for the good of the horse. An authority in equine anatomy and biomechanics, a British Horse Society Senior Coach, professional sports and remedial therapist, author and with a first-class honours degree in Equine Science and Business Management.
Gillian specialises in assessing posture and movement, devising exercises for improving performance and educating horse owners. She is well known for her anatomical painting on live horses which she uses for her teaching.
Caroline Moore 1968-2025
FBHS
Caroline produced and rode horses up to 5* level, competing at Badminton, Burghley, Bramham and Blenheim, as well as overseas. In 2007 she took part in the Olympic test event in Hong Kong on Don Giovanni. In 2010 she moved fully into coaching.
Caroline, was an Eventing Performance Coach, focussing on coaching riders and other coaches to improve their skills, with the main aim to develop confidence and belief by building correct foundations. She co-owned Allstar B, who was competed by Ros Canter. The pair first represented Great Britain at the 2017 European Championships in Strzegom, winning team gold and finishing fifth individually.
The following year, 2018, was even more successful. Ros and Allstar B placed third at Badminton before taking double gold at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, making them the new World Champions. A further team gold medal was won at the 2021 European Championships in Avenches.
Caroline later founded the Performance Mentoring Programme, which she set up to nurture young riders into potential senior squad athletes by providing them with a fully funded holistic support package to enable them to fulfil their potential.
Richard Davison
Dressage Specialist
Richard is a four-time Olympian and European medalist and has been at the forefront of the international equestrian world for almost four decades. As well as being among the world’s most experienced international riders he is in demand for his many other diverse and wide ranging skills and knowledge.
As well as competing in the 2012 London Olympic Games Richard also finished his four-year term as the British World Class Performance Manager and former British Dressage Team Captain. He is credited for ‘masterminding the strategic plan behind Britain’s most successful period of international successes’ resulting in their historic Olympic and European team gold medals and World Championship medals. Richard combined this role whilst himself competing at the highest levels including the World Cup Finals and the Olympics, a feat believed to be unequalled.
Aside from his own competition program Richard’s advice and coaching skills continue to be sought by some of the world’s most successful dressage and show jumping riders, including World and Olympic medalists. He has been a coach to UK Sports World Class Development Show Jumping Program for almost a decade.
Dr Sue Dyson
Independent. Consultant and Lameness Specialist
Sue Dyson graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1980. After an internship at the University of Pennsylvania and a year in private equine practice in Pennsylvania. Sue returned to Great Britain to the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket.
Sue ran a clinical referral service for lameness and poor performance, attracting clients from all over the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe for 37 years.
Sue is a former President of the British Equine Veterinary Association and is currently scientific advisor to the Saddle Research Trust and Moorcroft Rehabilitation Centre. Sue is also a rider, and has produced horses to top national level in both eventing and show jumping. Sue holds the Stage 5 Coach and Stage 5 Stable Managers Certificates of the British Horse Society.
Sue currently works as an independent consultant advising on non-veterinary aspects of equestrianism, drawing on her observations of many years as a hands-on horse person.
Mark Johnson
Farrier and Barefoot Specialist
Mark began working on horses feet at the age of 14, starting a formal apprenticeship at 16 and qualifying as a farrier in the U.K. 4 years later. Now, at the wrong side of 21 and being faced with too many questions and not enough answers, Mark was driven to continually challenge thinking and beliefs in the hoofcare industry
Changing direction multiple times and trying different approaches Mark and his long suffering clients has “settled” upon 3 key elements in his hoofcare business
First barefoot, second barefoot and boots and lastly composite shoes where necessary. Captivated by the function of anatomy Mark is passionate about the whole horse, where everything affects everything and everything connects to everything.
Mark Johnson wants to help create healthy and sound horses using his experience of: trimming, hoof boots, and composite shoes, combined with the essentials of nutrition, condition and environmental influence. His referral service is used by many in the equine world who want to improve the well-being of the horses in their care.
Dr Chris Pearce
Veterinary Surgeon and Dental Specialist
Chris is an RCVS and European Specialist in Equine Dentistry, and the founding director of Equine Dental Clinic Ltd (EDC). As well as performing advanced referral treatments, Chris teaches, lectures and examines widely on equine dentistry in the UK and worldwide.
He is past chairman of the BEVA/BVDA examining committee for EDT exams, past BEVA Council representative for equine dentistry, chairman of the BEVA Dental Working Party for political aspects relating to dentistry – and winner of the Pet Plan Vet of the Year Award for 2011, an achievement that the judges awarded in recognition of Chris’s work in equine dentistry and the beneficial effect on equine welfare.
Chris is the current President of the European Veterinary Dental College, the authority that trains and regulates veterinary dental specialists across Europe. Chris is dedicated to advancing the science of equine dentistry and is particularly interested in novel restorative and preservative treatments. This has placed Chris at the forefront of equine dentistry worldwide.
Clare MacLeod
Independent Registered Equine Nutritionist
Clare graduated with a first-class BSc honours degree in equine science in 1997, a Masters degree with distinction, in human and equine sports science in 2002, and became a Registered Nutritionist - with the Association for Nutrition's UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists in 2002.
Clare first worked for leading horse feed and supplement companies as their nutritionist, giving nutrition and dietary advice to horse owners, yard managers, and vets, formulating products, reviewing research, writing articles, and giving lectures.
Clare’s passion for the truth meant after a few years with companies, she moved into independent practice where she could offer owners a completely unbiased source of advice. During 2001/02 she independently achieved her Masters degree (MSc) at the University of Essex. Clare’s first book The Truth About Feeding Your Horse was published in February 2007 by J A Allen and has been so popular it is currently sold out, so a new edition is underway. Clare attends nutrition, health and exercise conferences whenever she can and keeps her expertise updated with continuing professional development (CPD).
Laurence Pearman
Fellow of the Society of Master Saddlers
Owner of Cirencester Saddlers and SMS Qualified Saddle Fitter
Laurence has a vast and varied wealth of experience and knowledge within the saddlery industry including saddle fitting, workshop, teaching and assessing. He is involved with the Society of Master Saddlers of which he is a Fellow and he is on the Livery of the Saddlers Company in London.
Laurence is a Master Saddler, a registered Society of Master Saddlers Qualified Saddle Fitter and an Assessor of the Qualified Saddle Fitters course and City and Guilds exams.
Laurence is dedicated to improving the saddlery trade and development whilst combining his traditional saddlery and leather working skills with new and innovative ideas. As a rider himself, Laurence is very aware of the challenging combinations of horse and rider.

Catherine is passionate about horses and even more so about equine welfare, as well as being qualified as a fitter and skilled craftsperson. Catherine takes a somewhat holistic approach to saddlery fitting, looking at the horse and rider combination and happily works with other equine professionals to maximise horse welfare and performance.
Catherine is also passionate about educating the riding public and provides lectures, demos and talks online or in-person. Catherine undertakes regular CPD to ensure that the content stays up to date and current. She specialises in making handmade, made to measure, bespoke bridles in her workshop in Wiltshire.
Matthew Barlow
Director of Home Farm Equine / Equine Vet
Matthew established Home Farm Equine in 2007 having worked in the area for over 13 years prior, as an equine vet.
Sport horses, lameness and poor performance are Matthew's forte but all horses and ponies come under his umbrella.
Alongside working in the practice, Matthew is an accredited racecourse vet covering racecourse duties at Southwell and Nottingham, and at many other local events including team chases, Point to Points and ploughing matches. Matthew is also an Official Veterinarian for export certification for EU and non EU exports.
Diane Gilby
Parasitologist and Founder of Intelligent Worming
Diane Gilby is an award-winning AMTRA-qualified animal medicines prescriber and one of the UK’s leading experts in equine parasitology. With over 25 years of experience working closely with horse owners, trainers, and veterinary teams, Diane has dedicated her career to advancing equine welfare through science-led parasite control.
She is the founder of Intelligent Worming, the UK’s first risk-assessed parasite management service—supporting over 10,000 horses to date without a single case of resistance. Her specialist focus includes stud parasitology, foals and youngstock, and performance horses. Diane also manages ScientifEQ, the diagnostic laboratory she developed in partnership with the University of Liverpool and Prof. Chris Proudman as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership.
A member of both the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology and the British Society for Parasitology, Diane represents all equine prescribers in the UK on the AMTRA Council. She was a founding member of CANTER, continues to serve on its Core Steering Group, and contributed to the development of the CANTER Best Practice Guidelines.
Diane brings a scientific yet accessible approach to her work, blending hands-on experience with the latest research to empower owners with practical, effective strategies. Outside of her parasitology work, she runs a retirement livery yard in Llansteffan and breeds Trakehner horses from a private stud, with a focus on impulsion, elasticity, movement, conformation, and temperament.
About the Short Form Presenters
Kirsty Lésniak
Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Equine Science at Hartpury University
For over 20 years, Kirsty's teaching and research has focused on the areas of anatomy and physiology, structural asymmetry, conformation, equine exercise physiology and biomechanics.
Kirsty’s primary research areas are anatomical symmetry, particularly of the distal limb and the foot. This has led to her undertaking and supervising a number of research projects investigating both factors that influence the conformation of the hoof in the ridden horse and factors that influence the development of skeletal asymmetry in the domestic horse.

Dr Meriel Moore-Colyer
Professor in Equine Science and Nutrition Specialist
Meriel’s research focus includes fundamental digestive physiology, forage quality and feeding systems for promoting health and welfare for stabled horses. She is a registered Animal Scientist with the Royal Society of Biology and chair of the European Workshop for Equine Nutrition Association.
Meriel is passionate about knowledge exchange and disseminating research to the horse industry. Her enthusiasm and engaging presentations are supported by genuine practical knowledge (she has competed British Dressage - Small Tour and is a BHSII), and this experience helps her to relate to veterinarians, industry professionals and horse owners alike.

Professor Meriel Moore-Colyer holds a personal chair in Equine Science, and since completing her PhD in Equine Digestive Physiology at the University of Edinburgh in 2000, she has specialised in equine nutrition. She has published over 120 scientific articles, 4 text books and numerous popular press articles.
Dr Sebastian McBride
Lecturer in Biological Sciences
In his continued research, Sebastian looked specifically at the neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning repetitive behavioural disorders. This line of investigation extended towards attributes of learning behaviour and computational models of brain systems as a way of better understanding some of the underlying mechanisms involved.
He later worked at the University of Cambridge developing cognitive tests as markers for normal and abnormal brain function in large animal species as part of a Huntington’s disease project. Sebastian has recently returned to Aberystwyth University to establish a research group on the effects of stress and ageing on ovine and equine cognition. He has presented several papers at international conferences and written a number of articles for both the scientific and popular press on the neuroscience of equine behaviour.

After completing a degree in Zoology at the University of Liverpool (UK) and a PhD in abnormal equine behaviour at the University of Edinburgh (UK), Dr Sebastian McBride continued his research at Aberystwyth University.
Kelly Marks
Horsemanship Specialist, Trainer and Author
Kelly’s career wins include championships in BSJA showjumping, race riding (flat and over jumps) and she’s a winner of the Pro/Am TREC at Royal Windsor Horse Show.
A patron of 3 charities, over the last 30 years, she has spent time running practical courses in Oxfordshire as well as travelling the UK and worldwide giving practical demonstrations on horsemanship either on her own or alongside Monty Roberts. She has lectured at universities worldwide including Cambridge Veterinary School. She spent a year touring for the British Horse Society for their Continued Professional Development.
Kelly’s current focus is on her own horses and online education including her very popular Horse Psychology courses that explain ‘unintended consequences’ and not just theory.

Roly Owers
Vet and Chief Executive of World Horse Welfare
Roly plays an active role in much of World Horse Welfare’s work supporting the horse-human relationship, and as a Director of the British Horse Council he regularly liaises on policy with Defra, the devolved administrations and Ministers. He also advises the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC) and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on horse Welfare, as well as other national federations.
Roly is currently Treasurer of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), Chairman of the UK Equine Disease Coalition, a Director of the British Horse Council, a Board member of the European Horse Network and Treasurer of the World Federation for Animals.

Roly is a qualified veterinary surgeon and has been Chief Executive of the charity World Horse Welfare since 2008. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1992 and acquired his Masters degree in Nutrition from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1997.
Dr Simon Curtis
Farrier, Lecturer, Author and Hoof- Care Specialist
Simon Curtis is a farrier, author, lecturer and horse hoof-care expert with a PhD in Equine Physiology and Biomechanics (2017). He is a 4th generation farrier; his family have been farriers and blacksmiths in the Newmarket area for at least 150 years. In over 45 years working as a farrier, he has lectured and demonstrated in more than 30 countries including the USA, Australia, India, Russia, and Brazil. Simon is internationally renowned in the hoof-care world for his remedial farriery textbooks and lectures.
He has authored several books on farriery and has been published in numerous journals. Among other roles, Simon is a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, was made a member of the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2005, and is the only farrier to have been awarded an Honorary Associateship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (2002).

Dave Kempsell
Saddle Engineer and Founder of Wow Saddles
David's original training had been in telecommunications, where he used to design trading equipment for the financial industry. His fascination with “how things work” coupled with his ability to think laterally made him look closer at how horse and rider interact. At that time, his partner owned a show jumping horse, which consistently had saddle-related problems. This motivated David to have a closer look at saddlery and its effect on the horse’s movement. David subsequently started to develop saddles which rely on a combination of airbags and foam to dissipate and absorb the pressures caused by the rider.

David Kempsell is the co-founder and Managing Director of First Thought Equine Ltd, a company that has turned the saddle industry upside down with their ground-breaking concepts and innovative products.
Dr Russell Mackechnie Guire
Biomechanist and Researcher
Russell is based at Centaur Biomechanics, a company which he founded in 2006. He has extensively researched the effect that tack (saddle, bridle and girth) and the rider has on equine health and performance. Russell holds a post at Hartpury University as a Reader in Equine Biomechanics. Russell’s current area of research is horse-saddle-rider interaction, spinal kinematics in horses when ridden over ground, the effect that rider asymmetry has on equine back movement, and from a rehabilitation perspective, the effect that training aids and pole work exercise has on back movement. In addition, Russell collaborates with researchers on various research projects associated with equine health, rehabilitation and performance.

Russell MacKechnie-Guire holds a PhD in Equine Biomechanics, graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in 2019. Russell’s thesis was titled ‘The Relationship between Saddle and Rider Kinematics, Equine Locomotion, and Thoracolumbar Pressures in Sports Horses’.
Dr Nicolas De Brauwere MRCVS
Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Redwings Horse Sanctuary
As Head of Welfare and Behaviour at Redwings, Nic leads a team that has specialised in the rescue, rehabilitation and long-term care of feral, unhandled or mistreated horses for more than a decade and this extensive experience has fundamentally informed the charity’s approach not only to equine health and welfare but equine behaviour and training too.
In particular, Nic’s extensive experience working in the field of equine welfare led to his appointment as the Chairman of the National Equine Welfare Council in 2009, an umbrella organisation for equine rescue centres and sanctuaries across the UK. Nic has been involved in consultations on many areas of animal welfare policy; most notably in this context he worked with the Welsh Government between 2012 and 2014 to assist them in drafting the Control of Horses (Wales) Act, which became law in Wales in 2014 and helped energise the commitment to an English equivalent that came into force the following year.

Nic graduated as a veterinary surgeon in 1991 from Onderstepoort in South Africa. He has worked at Redwings Horse Sanctuary for more than 30 years providing clinical services, herd health management and equine welfare case work both to facilitate rescue and alleviate the need for it.
