DISSECTION PROGRAMME WINTER 2010These are hands-on day courses offering an insight in to the anatomy of the horse and providing a rare and invaluable opportunity to look at the structures that we influence by training and therapy. The sessions will be led by Dr. Andrew Hemmings, an experienced neuroanatomist and principal lecturer in Animal Science and production at the Royal Agricultural College. Andrew will demonstrate and explain any techniques required. Many traditional, alternative and complimentary therapies exploit the reciprocal interaction between external sensory structures such as the skin, and the internal computatory mechanisms of the brain. This series of guided dissections gives a unique insight into equine brain function, and the composition of the muscular skeletal structure. At the last lecture in the series, Andrew will also look at the Reproduction systems of the horse.
The first dissection will look at how brain mechanisms become active during therapy; the neural pathways that may be influenced and how brain malfunction can give rise to repetitive stereotypic behaviours such as crib-biting and weaving. This demonstration paves the way for a deeper insight into the functioning of other anatomical structures. 10.00 Registration and Coffee
